The costs of non-compliance are high for patients, families, and the health care system. According to the American Pharmacists Association Foundation, failure to comply with medication instructions results in 125,000 deaths each year and 10-25% of hospital and nursing home admissions.
Research has found that the personal relationship between a patient and his or her pharmacist is the major predictor of medication compliance (NCPA). As a result, pharmacists across the country worked together to create a concept called "medication synchronization." You'll find the idea most often referred to as MedSync, though it is also called Align My Refills, or the Appointment Based Model.
MedSync allows you to pick up ALL medications at the same time and to work more closely with your pharmacist to make sure that the medications you are taking are right for you (or a loved one). Pharmacies sync medications by filling partial prescriptions until all refills occur at the same time. Patient out-of-pocket costs for partial refills are pro-rated.
