What is CareSmart Illinois?
Our Mission: To provide educational and support services to older adults, adults with cognitive and/or physical challenges, and their caregivers.
Founded in March 2014 by a small group of professionals who recognized the importance of community education related to aging, CareSmart Illinois offers non-medical educational programs, resources, and family caregiver consultations throughout Lake County. Our program and resources focus on ten aspects of wellness: emotional, environmental, financial, intellectual, nutritional, occupational/retirement, physical, protectoral (safety), social, and spiritual.
CareSmart Illinois primarily serves older adults, adults with disabilities, and family caregivers. We provide the following services:
Educational programs at local libraries, senior meeting sites, and churches on topics such as understanding and caring for a person with dementia, user-friendly homes, reducing hospital readmissions, and generational understanding
Web resources focusing on local and wellness resources
In-person and telephone consultations with older adults, family caregivers, and aging professionals
Information and referral related to aging, disability, and aging resources
The following services are in development:
Learning and support networks for family caregivers
Dementia-Friendly Community programs that educate organizations and businesses on communication and environmental changes that encourage people with cognitive challenges to remain engaged in the community
A Caregiver Coalition of cooperative agencies that support family caregivers of adults with cognitive and physical challenges
A database of vetted agencies and businesses that provide services to adults with cognitive and physical challenges
Our services are funded entirely by donations, charitable gifts, program sponsorships, grants, and fundraising activities. They are delivered by an Executive Director with a Masters’ degree in Gerontology (the study of aging) and Adult Education, supported by volunteers and clerical staff. From our inception, we have placed a high value on objective, non-biased, and useful resources… resources that bring praise from program participants for their empathy, clarity, and everyday practicality.
